Chapter I - The Fire

A year before everything shifted in 2020, someone said to me, “Maybe you need to burn it all down. And rise like the Phoenix.” At the time, it felt extreme. But life has a way of tending its own fires.

I was raised in art rooms and ballet studios; creativity was the language I spoke before I understood business. As a child, I dressed chess pieces in toilet paper gowns and turned Barbie dolls into couture brides. I promised myself early on that I would follow beauty wherever it led.

That path led to fashion school, where I graduated at the top of my class at the Durban University of Technology. It led to the thrill of the Nederburg Young Designer Competition, which I won with a collection inspired by the bold spirit of the Orlando Pirates. Johannesburg sparkled then. I built my label, J. Partridge and Daughters, and opened a shop in Rocky Street. I lived in color, noise, and momentum.

And then… the fire.

When my son was two, I walked away from a relationship that was eroding my spirit. I chose motherhood and safety. While I was in London, his father passed away. Grief does not arrive neatly; it comes layered with sorrow, relief, and a quiet, terrifying "what now?"

Chapter II - The Ashes & The Tide

Cape Town became the ashes. Rebuilding as a single mother meant starting again without the applause, learning that softness is not weakness, and that lace can be a form of armor.

Mystic Rose was not born from success; it was born from survival. But as the years turned into decades - 22 years of creation and curation -the fire began to meet its counterbalance: The Sea.

Moving to the coast, from the shores of Kalk Bay to the heart of Muizenberg, changed the rhythm of my work. If the Phoenix taught me how to rise from the flames, the ocean taught me how to flow with the tides. Whether I am surfing the waves or watching the light hit a piece of vintage velvet, the water reminds me that reinvention is as natural as the turning of the sea.

Chapter III - The Rising

Today, Mystic Rose has evolved from couture bridal to a conscious, slow-fashion philosophy. Sustainability is not a trend here; it is an inheritance. We honor what already exists. We transform. We waste nothing.

The Phoenix is not about destruction - it is about the courage to begin again. Mystic Rose is for the women who have walked through their own fires and still choose beauty. For the women who understand that we are always becoming.

I did not burn everything down. Life did some of that for me. But I rose. And like the tide, I am still rising.
